JOSE LUIS ALCAINE, cinematographer:

Born on 26th Dec. 1938 in the town of Tangier in Morocco, where he attended the LyceeRegnault de Tanger and the Spanish Institute. He then studied from 1961 to 1965, at the EOC/EscuelaOficial de Cinematografia, Madrid, aged 23. During his fertile professional career as cinematographer, starting from 1970 up to nowadays, he has impressive over 160 credits, becoming the most important Spanish cinematographer with great international reputation. The most prominent in the huge number of directors he has collaborated with is the leading filmmaker Pedro Almodovar with whom Alcaine built one of the world’s most respected tandems of cinematographer-director, signing the serial of Almodovar’s cult films: WOMEN ON THE VIERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988); TIE ME UP! TIE ME DOWN! (1990); BAD EDUCATION (2004, screened in the Competition of the Jubilee, 25thManaki Brothers); VOLVER (2006); THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011); I AM SO EXCITED (2013); Alcaine also built a tandem with other important director, Vicente Aranda, with whom, in fact, he started his earliest collaboration, in the films: CHANGE OF SEX (1977); GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN PANTIES (1980); The artistic trio: Alcaine-Aranda-actress Abril will continue in 1987 in the first part of the two-episode film, EL LUTE I and EL LUTE II. He continued with Aranda in the films: AMANTES/LOVERS (1990); INTRUDER (1993); LA PASSION TURKA (1994); LIBERTARIAS (1996); THE MAIDENS CONSPIRACY (2006); LOLITA’S CLUB (2007). Alcaine also collaborated with other leading Spanish directors: Manuel Gutierrez Aragon in the two excellent films: DEMONS IN THE GARDEN (1982) and HALF OF HEAVEN (1986). With director Bigas Luna he shot the Trilogy Iberica: HAM, HAM (1992), GOLDEN BALLS (1993) and THE TIT AND THE MOON (1994). The Crown in Alcaine’s fruitful career is the Academy Award won in 1994 for the Best Foreign Film-BELLE EPOQUE, directed by Fernando Trueba, with whom Alcaine also collaborated several times. With the great Spanish director Saura, Alcaine created 2 also excellent films: AY, CARMELA! (1990) and EL SUR/SOUTH (1992). He also shot the film with the same title SOUTH (1983, directed by Victor Erice. Alcaine is also known by his theory about the inspiration of the masterpiece painting of Picasso “Guernica” (1937). He is convinced that it was inspired from the American classic movie FAREWELL TO THE ARMS (1932), inspired by the Novel of Ernest Hemingway, directed by Frank Borzage. In 2013, at the 34thManaki Brothers, Jose Luis Alcaine, entered in our Club of Greats, receiving THE GOLDEN CAMERA 300 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
